Motorcycling The Cherohala Skyway

A Ride on the Skyway

The area surrounding Monroe County, Tennessee and the Cherokee National Forest is some of the world's best riding. There are breath taking views around every curve!

We traveled from Chattanooga and stayed at the Cherohala Motorcycle Resort.  As it was late Fall we opted for a cabin. There is tent camping available also. The Cherohala Motorcycle Resort is on a beautiful piece of land with open field, running stream (with watercress!) and wooded areas. There is a great pavilion for socializing and eating, with very clean restrooms and showers. Renee and Mark, the owners, greeted us warmly on arrival. Renee and Mark host many rallies during the year.

After a very comfortable night we drove into Tellico Plains for breakfast and ate at the Town Square Cafe and Bakery. There is lot of character going on here! They have great breakfasts from excellent omelets to pancakes and bacon.

Right around the corner from the Town Square Cafe is Scott Street, where there is a cool motorcycle shop, Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters. We walked down this intriguing little road to find the Tellico Arts Center, a not for profit juried art center thats purpose is to support local arts and provide a place where both visitors and local citizens may enjoy the wide array of indigenous arts.

We then headed back toward the Skyway and stopped at the Visitor Center for a map (frameable!) and friendly information. Attractive t-shirts and other Cherohala Skyway history items and memorabilia are available. There are also outdoor picnic tables if you would like to sit and have lunch in a lovely area.

Finally we start down the Cherohala, but of course are side tracked by the sign to Bald River Falls. We turned right on River Road and soon came to the sign for the Ranger Station. Being anxious to see Bald River Falls we drove on down the little windy sun dappled road, enjoying the little river that runs beside it. You can view Bald River Falls right from the road; just watch out for people standing on the bridge!

We head back down the little country road to the Skyway.
